Welcome to my site,
Thanks to my parents, my name is Dorothy Bland. However, folks who know me say there's not much bland about me besides my last name.
Dorothy Height, who was a matriarch in the civil rights movement and known for her hats, is one of my sheroes. Thanks to my parents, I bear her first name. Like Dorothy Height and other women, I wear many hats. My family knows me as a daughter, sister, cousin and aunt. Thanks to professional training, I have worked as a reporter, editor, media executive, newspaper publisher, media/marketing consultant and coach.
I have served as the journalism division director and a professor at Florida A&M University, which is the largest historically black college or university in the United States. I tell my students that my major is learning and it is true. I love learning about people, storytelling and exploring cultures around the world. Friends also know I am a travel gypsy, jazz lover, shutter bug and certified chocoholic.
Marian Wright Edelman once said, "Service is the rent we pay for living." I agree, and that's why I have a long record of volunteering in organizations ranging from the United Way to the National Association of Black Journalists.
The goal of this website is to share some of my work as well as some of my passions. Enjoy!
